TBT - Now and Then with Toby West

Good morning, Everyone!

I can hardly believe it's Thursday again.......seems like it was just yesterday.

I have a real treat for you today.  How many of you remember Toby West?

Toby West is a southern interior designer whose work was published in many magazines during the past twenty years or so.  However, in recent years he seemed to have disappeared from the media.  I tried to find out more about him a few months ago and discovered he had opened (and since closed) an antique shop in Cashiers, NC.

I had a few of his homes from some old issues of Veranda magazines that I wanted to share with you.  I picked one, at random, off my shelf last night and there was a Toby West home in it.  Later, as I was catching up on some of my usual blogs, I found his current home in Cashiers on 'A Ribbon in my Journal'..........a blog by Phyllis Hoffman who happens to be the publisher of Southern Home magazine, Victoria magazine and others.  So, Toby's current cabin is in the latest issue of Southern Home which is on the stands now.

I absolutely love his cabin in the mountains of Cashiers.  His warm red interiors (I'm a red lover, too) are so homey and inviting.

Now:

Apparently, Toby designed a number of interiors in Seaside and Watercolor, Florida over the years. So, in the past, his look had softer, coastal colors - but always a very traditional and comfortable vibe.

So, here we have his cabin in the mountains and a cottage in Florida.

Enjoy!

Then:

Which would you choose - cabin or cottage?  Let me know!

Have a wonderful day!

The Charmed Life of India Hicks at Hibiscus Hill

The current issue of Traditional Home features the charmed life of India Hicks whose life on Harbour Island in the Bahamas is nothing short of heavenly.

India, as you will remember, was the 13 year old bridesmaid to Princess Diana and the goddaughter of Prince Charles.  Her mother, Pamela, is the daughter of the late Lord Mountbatten and her father was the renowned British designer, David Hicks.  Quite a legacy.....

India has not rested on her laurels, though.......after spending years modelling, she and her partner moved to Harbour Island in 1995 and established a very enviable lifestyle........besides her wonderful homelife with five children, India has spread her wings in many directions and is known for her home decor designs (on HSN), furniture designs, jewellery, fragrances, books she has authored and has her own shop in Harbour Island called The Sugar Mill, which I visited a couple of years ago while vacationing on the Island, and owns a hotel!  Imagine!

The following images are exterior shots of her fabulous home.

Enjoy and have a great day!

An Early William Diamond Design

As a followup to yesterday's Baratta post, I thought perhaps the true fans of Diamond Baratta might be interested in seeing an early (1980s perhaps) Manhattan apartment designed by William Diamond.

You will recognize his hand in these images, but it was long before they formed a partnership and amassed their unique group of artisans for their personalized details.

This post could just as easily have been about 'Animal Art in Decor', as that seems to be the main theme here......you can never go wrong with animal art and it adds a wonderful touch to the mix of quilts, tartans, chintz, hand hooked rugs, needlepoint and antiques.  Overall, the owners wanted a very relaxed 18th - 19th century look, so they shopped carefully for their choice of antiques.  Diamond went with vintage trunks to act as coffee tables, as coffee tables weren't really available in earlier centuries.

Now that William Diamond has retired, Anthony Baratta continues to forge ahead solo.

Enjoy!

The Hamptons Home of Candace Bergen

Hi Everyone!

One more shingled house to share with you.

Today's house is owned by actress Candace Bergen and her husband, Marshall Rose.  Since they also have homes in New York and California, this is a year round getaway for them in the Hamptons.

I saw this house in Architectural Digest a couple of years ago, and loved the homey and comfy interiors....perhaps because it is a year round getaway, it has a lot more color and warmth than most summer homes........which are often blue and white and have more of a coastal look and feel.

The designer chosen to update this house was Elissa Cullman, the same designer chosen to do Oprah Winfrey's Hawaiian home, which I posted about some time ago.  I mention this because you will see similar Cullman touches in the addition of animal weathervanes, quilts, lots of color and an overall inviting ambience.

Candace likes animals and whimsy in her home and she has achieved both here.  Certainly, her beloved dog, Jerry, seems to enjoy lapping up the good life.  I don't blame him!

Enjoy!

Love this long, spacious back deck.

Another view of the backyard.

Luxuriant greenery along the walkway

Notice the dog figurines in the living room

The animal weathervanes and the dog under the console table add whimsy

Al fresco dining

Upstairs sitting room - notice the quilt on the wall to the left

The master bedroom with a comfy sitting area

The guest room with another quilt on the wall

And here's Jerry!  Living la dolce vita!  A lucky dog to say the least!

A Designer's Charming Home

While doing a little research on interiors the other night, I happened upon this charming home owned by interior designer, Wendy Valliere.

After years of producing wonderful interiors for her clients, and never having done a red kitchen, she decided it was time to do one for herself when she settled down in a small Vermont town.

Looking at her home, red is obviously a favorite color of hers, as it is tastefully interspersed throughout.  The red kitchen is a knockout, the red guest room is an absolute charm and where would the black and white master bedroom and bath be without those perfectly placed splashes of red?

I was thrilled to find the whole home that went with those gorgeous quilt top window treatments in the guest room, as I had used that exact image a while back in a post on "Decorating with Quilts".  And that swan bed is to die for!

Hope you enjoy this home as much as I did.  To see more, check out New England Home magazine.

Enjoy!
